What do you think is the greatest of God’s numerous gifts to us? Let’s explore some of His glorious gifts to discover God’s greatest gift. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Gen. 1:1). God gave us the incredible gift of the universe, with billions of galaxies, solar systems, suns, planets, and worlds. He gave us light, air, water, earth, plants and animals.
“God created man in His own image” and “likeness” (Gen. 1:26-27). God gave us life, consciousness, mind, emotions, and will, and made us at the top of His creation, in His own image and likeness.
In addition, “God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there He put the man whom He had formed” (Gen. 2:8). God gave us a garden with beautiful flowers, fruit, and trees and even put us there.
What’s more, “God..made He a woman, and brought her unto the man” (Gen. 2:22). God gave us intimacy, companionship, love, marriage, sex, and even brought a spouse to us.
Furthermore, God said we could have it all, do it all, except one thing. “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat” (Gen. 2:16-17). God gave us freedom to trust Him, and not disobey, resulting in death, destruction, and despair.
But, we did not trust God, we thought He was keeping something from us, we all disobeyed, and the spiritual and natural laws resulted in disease, decay, and death. Even “the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now” (Rom. 8:22).
Therefore, God gave us a temporary legal way to cover our guilt, sin, and shame by again trusting Him, by observing temporary substitutionary sacrifices (cf. Heb. 10:10-14).
Consequently, God gave us many Old Testament promises of a final prophesied perfect sacrifice. “1-…the gospel of God, 2-(Which He had promised afore by His prophets in the holy Scriptures,) 3-Concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, Which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; 4-And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead” (Rom. 1:1-4).
Obviously, God’s greatest gift is Himself, His only Son’s death, resulting in eternal life. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom. 6:23). “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” (Eph. 2:8). Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection accepted by faith bestowing eternal life, is God’s greatest gift. Being able to be fully restored, being saved, being adopted into God’s family, being able to walk on streets of gold, living in God’s house, having a glorified body…is God’s gift that keeps on giving. “Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift” (2Co. 9:15).
Just remember, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with Whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17). When you are the glorious light source, you do not have any shadow, nor do your gifts reflect any. God’s greatest gift is His Son, Who brings peace, reconciliation, and eternal life. I hope you thank God for all His gifts, and have received His greatest gift, Jesus Christ as Savior. That should make each of us want to receive such a great gift, and all that it entails. Merry Christmas; and truly make merry because of the gracious glorious gift of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If you enjoyed this blog, you might enjoy Celebrating Christmas.
