A Literal 6-Day Creation?

Several days ago I had an interesting discussion of Creation and a literal Biblical Hermeneutic as it related to 6-days or billions of years for Creation (see earlier Blog on Biblical Hermeneutics). Theistic Evolutionists often rebut the Creationist’s hermeneutical argument that the Bible should always be interpreted literally, unless it does not make sense to do so. Then, and only then can you literally employ the grammatical rules of figurative language. Many embrace a non-literal argument to try to win the favor of various worldly “scientific” theories that all require billions of years to even be remotely statistically plausible. Even atheists and other unsaved people (who clearly do not accept the Bible as true or even as God’s Word) attempt to dissuade Christians from the truth by using non-literal arguments to refute what Scripture actually states. Many wrongly attempt to use Psalms 90:4 and 2 Peter 3:8 as justification to take a literal day and make it figurative. However, both use the literal simile “as” when figuratively comparing God’s patience in judgment with “a thousand years” is “as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night” or “as one day.” Clearly both use the literal figurative device of a simile (a comparison using “like” or “as“), so are clearly figurative. None of the Creation accounts do so, in fact, they use multiple grammatical clues to demonstrate they are literal.  Without taking the time here to refute Evolution, the Gap, or the Day Age Theories, let us examine a few of the specifics of the Biblical Creation accounts that support a literal interpretation of the 6-day Creation account.

Genesis 1 and 2, clearly says Creation occurred in 6-days and God rested on the seventh day. God also repeats this outside of Genesis. “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it” (Exo. 20:11). Notice He even says, “all that in them is,” not just a partial creation. “It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed(Exo. 31:17). Jesus says “from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female” (Mar. 10:6), not that man originated after billions of evolutionary processes. The Creation account clearly says that it was the “first,” “second,” “third,” “fourth,” “fifth,” and “sixth” day. Reinforcing these 6 clear statements, when the Hebrew word “yom” is preceded by a number, in Scripture that always refers to literal 24-hour days. The Biblical Creation account also literally says, “the evening and the morning” six times (Gen. 1:5, 8, 13, 19, 23, 31) of each literal day. God says of His creation “that it was good” (Gen. 1:4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25), not that it needed billions of additional years to help improve it by natural processes. God literally emphasizes His Creation of the world and His establishment of the 7-day week culminates with the seventh day as a “Sabbath day” of rest, which the Bible mentions by name 172 times. The Sabbath Day is not a period of billions of years and neither has God rested that long, because it is literally 1-day, in which God rested from His finished Creation work. The Bible says sin and death came from Adam, not predecessors of dead lesser transitioning creatures: “by one man sin entered into the world and death by sin” (Rom. 5:12), just like it says in Genesis 3:1-6. Also the Scripture uses the word “kind” 41 times in the sense that God created all genus or species to bring forth or reproduce after their “kind” (Hebrew “meen,” Greek “phusis” or “genos“), which is always demonstrated to be true in nature.

Why do people persist in adjusting what the Bible says in favor of what it does not say? Times have changed, but the Bible has not. Are we to deduce that the people of long ago were just stupid that they believed in a literal 6 day creation? It seems much more incredulous to believe the millions or billions of years to me; that is fuzzy math, in my opinion. Since “by the word of the Lord the heavens were made,” and many other passages all throughout Scripture need to be amended to reflect a view that would more accurately state a theistic evolution approach, which really isn’t theistic at all. Thanks for your careful explanation and defense of the Scriptures.

This passage of Scripture says that by God’s Word the heavens were made, by His breath were all the hosts of them made. The death knell to old earthers is verse 9, where God “spake, and it was done…” and by His command, “it stood fast.” There is no macro-evolution. There is no need for change. There is no additional time. God does not need that.

Psalms 33:6-9 says, “6-By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. 7-He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: He layeth up the depth in storehouses. 8-Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. 9-For He spake, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.”

Unfortunately, Charles Darwin married his first cousin, who was sickly. They had many children together, three of which died at a young age. This angered him towards God and so he began to look for another alternative for the origin of the universe and all it contains. He became the Father of Evolution Theory, but then debunked his own theory, which also debunks Theistic Evolution with this written statement. “When we descend to the details, we cannot prove that a single species has changed, nor can we prove that the supposed changes were beneficial, which is the ground work of the Theory.” Charles Darwin (Life and Letters of Charles Darwin, Vol. 1, p. 210).
